Moving from the US to Israel
Household goods moving from the US to Israel typically travel by sea container or air freight, and the customs rules depend on whether you arrive as a new immigrant or as a returning resident.

Step 1 of 3: your route
Free, no obligation.
The Ministry of Aliyah and Integration publishes the framework for both. This page summarises the household goods conditions in its guide, the vehicle conditions, items needing permits, and how returning residents register ahead of the move.
Documents and customs basics
Meet the household goods conditions
The Ministry's guide says household goods must arrive within three years of the date of aliyah, in no more than three shipments in addition to the luggage brought on entry by plane or boat. They must be for the immigrant's own household, and a rental or purchase contract for the home is usually requested. Source
Keep the goods for personal use
Goods must be used by the immigrant in Israel for at least 6 years from acquisition or release, 4 years for a car, and cannot be passed to anyone else. Items must be in reasonable quantities, and they are released by the immigrant in person or by a customs agent holding power of attorney. Source
Declare through the red lane
Arrivals carrying only personal belongings use the green lane. Anyone bringing other items or extra quantities must use the red lane and declare them, even when they believe an exemption applies. Source
Plan for vehicles and permits
A new immigrant with a licence from the last country of residence may import a vehicle with concessions, provided it is a make and model approved by the Ministry of Transport and arrives within three years. Weapons, drug-containing medicines, plants and animals need permits from the relevant ministries. Source
Register early as a returning resident
A returning resident is an Israeli citizen and former resident who lived overseas for at least two consecutive years and is 17 or older on return. The guide says to register on the Ministry's site up to six months before returning, with the eligibility confirmation valid for about half a year. Source
Handle the U.S. side of a vehicle
For a used vehicle leaving the US by sea or air, CBP requires both the documentation, centered on the original certificate of title, and the vehicle itself to be presented at least 72 hours before export. Source
What your estimate needs
Your estimate starts from your inventory: the rooms, the larger items and anything that needs special handling, such as a vehicle. Share your list and your move date, and your consultant confirms the details for your route.
FAQ
Moving from the US to Israel
What does an Israel estimate need from me?
A room-by-room inventory. Because the number of shipments is capped for customs purposes, a complete list helps decide what goes in each one.
Can I send things in several waves?
The guide allows up to three shipments in addition to your entry luggage, all within three years of aliyah.
Does the guide give a fixed list of banned goods?
It gives examples only, such as certain knives, and advises checking with the relevant authority before importing anything doubtful.
Are returning residents treated like new immigrants?
They are a separate category with their own registration step and eligibility conditions, covered in a separate chapter of the same guide.
